How do you test for psychic abilities in people ?
or even on yourself? What methods have to be placed to prevent incorrect assumptions?

We are not prophets. We are not psychic. It may be a trait we will gain someday far in the future but if it is, we do not have these kind of abilities yet.

The best way is to test the psychic is with a repeatable experiment. Take the most commonly claimed psychic ability here on Yahoo Answers, astral projection. A blind test would be as simple as two rooms and a blackboard. Put the tester in one room with the blackboard and the astral projector in another. All the projector need do is project into the next room and come back with a word written on the blackboard. Do this a few times and the projector would prove their claim, shut the skeptics the heck up and become very, very wealthy.
Equally simple tests could be set up for any of the kinesis’ , remote viewing or any other psychic power.
One has to wonder why well funded paranormal organizations like Rhine don’t set something like this up. Instead they have no answer for experiments like the one below other than it’s fixed or the ubiquitous ” it doesn’t work like that “.

Most tests use Zeiner cards A deck or cards with specific symbols on them. Then you can test for things like precognition (guessing what card will come next) Telepathy, guessing what symbol card the other person is “transmitting” Clairvoyance—guessing a card that is NOT being looked at etc.——Ability is measured in terms of how much above PROBABILITY the subject scores.
Of course SOME “psychic episodes” are spontaneous and unpredictable, especially the more profound ones., But like the study of volcanic eruptions, one has to be there at the right time when it happens to run the tests. So little progress is made in this area, due to the inconvenience and randomness of the event.
There are other unknown aspects that may foil some tests. For example, many Psychics cannot read written words when in these states—Its like they are “Dyslexic” So a test devised on reading words may not work—–BUT it is a clue that the ability must reside in the “RIGHT Brain” rather than the Left side where reading and math are processed.—-So a test must be “right Brain oriented.”—Designs and shapes rather than Letters and Numbers.
Remember we know LITTLE about these abilities and HOW they work or what kind of data they work with. other random facts—-Telepathy does not work with Images(not directly any way–its translated int words and reconstructed at the receiver), Proper nouns (Words in which a letter is capitalized) or words that mean the same thing as a word learned earlier for the same concept.(eg. the first word learned and associated with a concept is what is transmitted)
Again, symbols work better than letters.
